How the difficulty is set
What sets the difficulty is how lateral the category is. An easy category is a plain kind of thing, so one clue is often enough to see it. A hard one groups words by a shared property rather than a kind, which means each clue on its own belongs to a dozen other categories and only the combination gives it away. Every category, at every level, is a plain matter of fact, and no clue ever repeats the answer.
